GST ITC Deadline 2026: Complete These Checks Before 30 November or Risk Losing Eligible Credit
GST ITC Deadline 2026: Complete These Checks Before 30 November
A missing invoice, an incorrect GSTIN or unreconciled GSTR-2B may result in eligible input tax credit being left unclaimed.
Do not wait until 30 November 2026. Start checking FY 2025–26 purchase invoices, GSTR-2B and books now.
Many business owners believe that GST input tax credit can be claimed whenever an old invoice is found. This is not always correct.
Section 16(4) of the CGST Act provides a time limit for claiming ITC. For invoices and debit notes relating to FY 2025–26, the outer limit is generally 30 November 2026 or the date of filing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier.
This makes October and early November the right time to complete a detailed GST reconciliation.
What should a business check?
1. Books versus GSTR-2B
Compare the purchase register with GSTR-2B invoice by invoice. Identify missing, duplicate and mismatched entries.
2. Supplier follow-up
If an eligible invoice is missing from GSTR-2B, contact the supplier early and request correction in the applicable return.
3. Eligibility check
An invoice appearing in GSTR-2B does not automatically mean that credit is eligible. The conditions under the GST law must also be satisfied.
Last-minute ITC checklist
- Match the purchase register with GSTR-2B.
- Check the supplier’s GSTIN, invoice number and invoice date.
- Confirm that goods or services were actually received.
- Check invoices booked in accounts but missing from GSTR-2B.
- Identify invoices appearing in GSTR-2B but missing from the books.
- Remove duplicate ITC claims.
- Review credit notes and debit notes.
- Review blocked credits under Section 17(5).
- Check common credit relating to taxable and exempt supplies.
- Review vendor payments exceeding the prescribed 180-day period.
- Check reverse-charge tax and related eligible ITC.
- Maintain invoice copies and supporting documents.
The eye-opening point many businesses miss
GSTR-2B is an important control, but appearance in GSTR-2B alone does not establish final eligibility.
The business must also verify the invoice, receipt of goods or services, business use, payment conditions and restrictions relating to blocked or common credit.
Simple practical example
Assume that a business recorded a machinery-repair invoice in March 2026. The invoice is available in the books, but it is not appearing in GSTR-2B because the supplier reported an incorrect GSTIN.
If the matter is noticed early, the business can contact the supplier and examine the available correction route. If it is noticed only after the statutory time limit, the opportunity to claim otherwise eligible credit may be lost.
Documents to keep ready
| Document or report | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Purchase register | Identify all ITC recorded in the books |
| GSTR-2B downloads | Match supplier-reported invoice details |
| Invoices and debit notes | Verify documentary support |
| Credit notes | Check whether ITC requires adjustment |
| Vendor ageing report | Review unpaid invoices and applicable reversals |
What should you do now?
- Download GSTR-2B for all months of FY 2025–26.
- Prepare a complete reconciliation with your purchase register.
- Separate eligible, ineligible, missing and doubtful credits.
- Contact suppliers wherever corrections may be required.
- Complete a professional review well before the statutory time limit.
